Captain's bars passed on through combat zone history
The rank of captain has been symbolized by double silver bars since 1832, and is sometimes referred to as railroad tracks. A specific set of the insignia has been passed down in combat zones through history, originating in World War II. In August, a captain flying out of Transit Center at Manas, Kyrgyzstan, got to continue that tradition pinning on the special insignia which had been flown on a combat mission over Afghanistan. Transit Center 9/11 memorial walk
On Sept. 11, 2013, a mixture of desert-colored flight suits, Operation Enduring Freedom Camouflage Pattern multicam uniforms, Airman Battle Uniforms and Army Combat Uniforms dot the ranks of hundreds of service members from the Transit Center at Manas, Kyrgyzstan, walking in memory of people who have died in service since the attacks against America on Sept. 11, 2001. The hushed tribute began after a moment of silence beginning at 6:46 p.m. locally, the exact moment when the first airplane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center a dozen years ago. 9/11 Memorial Ceremony
The 376th Air Expeditionary Wing holds a 9/11 Memorial Ceremony at Transit Center at Manas, Kyrgyzstan, Sept. 11, 2013. The ceremony was held to pay tribute to the lives lost in the 9/11 attacks and to highlight the heroic actions of the New York City Fire Department Chief of Department Peter J. Ganci Jr. who was among the 343 firefighters and paramedics killed while conducting rescue operations at the World Trade Center. Following the 9/11 attacks, the Transit Center, formerly known as Ganci Air Base in honor of Chief Ganci, reactivated and designated the 376th Air Expeditionary Wing in December 2001 to support operations in Afghanistan.
