3/30/2012 - SOUTHWEST ASIA -- An F-15E Strike Eagle crashed March 28 at 8:06 p.m. local time approximately 15 miles outside of base, killing one crew member and injuring the second.
Capt. Francis Imlay Jr., the pilot of the aircraft, was killed in the crash. The weapon systems officer was medically evacuated to a military medical facility for treatment of minor injuries.
"This is a tragic time for the Bold Tiger family," said Lt. Col. David Brynteson, 391st Expeditionary Fighter Squadron commander. "Capt. Imlay was a tremendous fighter pilot and a true professional, always dedicated to the mission. Our deepest sympathies, thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and coworkers."
Imlay, a Vacaville, Calif., native, was deployed with more than 300 other Airmen from Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
He is survived by his wife and two children.
"His memory will live on in the Bold Tigers through the aircrew he taught, the stories he told, and the life full of happiness, joy and love that he lived," Brynteson said.
Strike Eagles are dual-role fighter aircraft that support air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
