Rock Solid Warrior: Tech. Sgt. Sylvia Goodwin
Q: What is your family’s military heritage (anyone else in your family who was/is in the military?):
A: My dad was drafted in the Army, my older sister did 15 years in the Army, and my two brothers were in the Marines for an enlistment.
Q: What is your mission here (in general terms)?
A: My mission here is to serve as the executive assistant to the office of the command chief.
Q: What are some of the best parts of your mission?
A: I enjoy the fact that I am able to see all aspects of the mission being accomplished within the wing with working with the wing leadership daily. I’ve learned a lot in the past six months here, and I will definitely be taking what I’ve learned back to my home unit to share.
Q: What are some of the challenges you face while conducting your mission, and how do you overcome them?
A: I really haven’t had any challenges that I’ve had to face while conducting the mission. It’s been a smooth deployment, thankfully.
Q: How does your job differ in a deployed environment vs. home base?
A: I am admin at home as well, but I work directly for a commander not for a command chief. So it’s been different being able to see the aspects of the senior enlisted side of things instead of only the officer side of the house.
Q: How many times have you deployed?
A: This is my 4th deployment.
Q: What makes this deployment unique?
A: This deployment has been unique because of the people that I have been able to meet. I’ve gained some lifetime friends who I wish I could take back to my base with me.
Q: Why did you join the Air Force?
A: I joined the military because college wasn’t what I wanted to do, and I wanted to leave Florida, so I came in right out of high school. I originally was going to do four years, but at that point in my career I was on base number three. So now, 17 years later I am still enjoying the Air Force ride.
