Default Air Force Logo Veteran’s Day – A Reflection
Veterans Day originated as "Armistice Day" on Nov. 11, 1918 to commemorate the end of World War I. First proclaimed by Congress in 1926 and each year thereafter, Armistice Day was officially changed to "Veterans Day" in 1954 as a result of legislation signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The name was changed to honor all who served our nation

Heritage and Horizons
During our Air Force's 60th Anniversary celebrations, we adopted a slogan titled, "Heritage to Horizons." To some it was just a trite advertising campaign, to me and many others it was a call to action. In the history of our great Air Force, we have had many heroes. Some were leaders such as Gen. Hap Arnold and Gen. Carl Spaatz, while others were

SOUTHWEST ASIA--Major Fernando Colon, Jr., 380th Expeditionary Maintenaince Squadron commander, discusses core values in general and how they are applied uniquely to the Air Force. Core Values, Close-Up
Growing up in New York City, I can remember the fun I had playing stickball between the alleyways of the apartment buildings. In the summer, we would open the fire hydrants so we could cool off with the ice-cold water. We would play basketball all day at the playgrounds until my mother came after us for dinner. Those seemed like innocent days a

SOUTHWEST ASIA—Lt. Col. Raymond E. Briggs, Jr., 380th Expeditionary Maintenance Group deputy commander, reflects on a memorable phrase by General David H. Patraeus, U.S. Central Command commander, from earlier this year. (Courtesy photo) Inspirational ‘All in?'
In a speech at a Marine Corps Association dinner earlier this summer, Gen Patraeus asked the audience, "Are you all in?" with respect to their efforts in overseas contingency operations. The KC-10 operators and maintainers that surged to record levels of sortie production under persistent black flag conditions to cover the Afghan elections were

Default Air Force Logo What's the most popular computer password?
Do you know what the most popular computer password is? My guess would have been "password" or the every sneaky "p@ssword." Turns out, the most common password is "123456." Wow, that will surely baffle cyber crooks. Believe it or not, some folks have looked into that. They researched passwords stolen from a popular e-mail service by phishers.

Attitude is Everything
"I-think-I-can, I-think-I-can, I-think-I-can ......" You can learn a lot from a little train engine--I did. I learned anything is possible with the right attitude. For those of you who haven't read or been read the childrens' book, The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper, it is a tale about a long train that needs to be pulled over a high

Until age 18 when I left for college, a whole 50 miles away from home in Cheyenne, Wyo., my big move in life was from an upstairs bedroom to a downstairs one. Four years later, I had a choice of attending several dental schools - some in Nebraska, close to my home, and others far from home. As I was trying to decide where to go, a prominent dentist

Members of the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing wait for retreat to be sounded here Sept. 18, 2009. (U.S. Air Force Photo/2nd Lt. Kidron B. Vestal). A morsel of patience
In a world where news loses its value by the minute, the press desires to serve the choicest morsels. In doing so, is it right to make a military matter a political process? A document en route to President Barack Obama from Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, senior U.S. commander in Afghanistan, was recently leaked to the media. Now, all wait with a

Default Air Force Logo The Reason Americans Deploy
The concrete shimmered in the distance as heat waves danced in turbulent waves. In its midst rested a dark combat aircraft, motionless, baking as arid breezes swept by. A dust covered thermometer on the nearby hanger wall pointed glaringly to 119 degrees. Underneath, toils a young Airman. The sweat beads dropped from the Airman's face onto the hot
