Rock Solid Warrior: Staff Sgt. Johnny Hernandez

SOUTHWEST ASIA --

I’m Staff Sgt. Johnny Hernandez, a 386th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron NCO in-charge of emergency management planning and operations. I am deployed from the 355th Civil Engineer Squadron at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona. I joined the Air Force to see the world and do something after high school.

As the NCOIC of emergency management planning and operations, my job is to create emergency response plans and procedures that are used to respond to and recover from the full spectrum of threats we are susceptible to. I also manage the emergency operations center ensuring the emergency support function representatives are properly trained and able to perform when the EOC is activated. The best part of my mission is getting to work with the emergency and first responders.

The biggest challenge I face in my mission is the joint portal shield contract was not renewed. Now we must provide biological detection capabilities for the base and monitor and sample manually. Our flight overcomes this challenge with a combined effort and using an employment plan I drafted to ensure the process is enduring.

My professional goals are to complete my Course 15 and make technical sergeant next year. My personal goal is to get my bachelors in elementary education.

Some of my hobbies are basketball, volleyball, and playing cards. I enjoy doing anything that involves competition.
