The base of brotherly love

Deploying can bring many adventures and life-long memories. Having your brother deployed with you is an experience hardly anyone can relate to-unless you are the Morales brothers. Staff Sgt. Walter Morales Talento and Senior Airman Guido Morales are currently deployed to the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing for the second time in their Air Force careers.

In 2014, both brothers and their older brother Luis, were all deployed to this base at the same time. What are the chances of that happening? Slim to none if you ask any other member of the wing who has deployed before. However, deployment lightning struck not once, but twice for these two brothers from California.

“When they told me we were both deploying to the 386th AEW, I felt comfortable knowing my brother and I had each other’s back,” stated the middle brother Walter. “Our mom is happy we are both here, knowing that we are taking care of each other.”

Younger Morales brother, Guido, is also appreciative of being able to deploy and appreciates the uniqueness of the situation.

“When I heard the news this year I was excited,” stated Morales. “We get to travel around the world together and share in the adventures.”

Both brothers are members of the California Air National Guard’s 146th Airlift Wing, located at Channel Islands. They’re both aerospace maintainers working in the 386th Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. Walter, who is seven years older than Guido, is the portrait of working toward the American Dream. He and his family migrated to the United States when he was eight years old. He immediately had a desire to serve the country that gave him so many opportunities.

“I hope to be the best Airman I can and I want to set a good example for others back in my home country of Guatemala who are not able to serve in the U.S. Air Force,” stated Morales Talento. “I’m appreciative of the leadership here and of my teammates for allowing me to serve with them.”

Guido shares his brother’s assessment of serving with his teammates from the 386 EAMXS.

“There is a strong bond in our unit,” stated Morales. “We all feel like brothers and sisters working toward the common goal of succeeding in our mission. My family has grown while deployed to the Rock.”
