Manas Airmen build bonds with Bishkek Babushkas
Airman 1st Class Jeremy Bowen helps Maria K. open a box of chocolates she brought to share with her friends from Manas Air Base who came to visit her and two other elderly ladies for lunch at a Turkish restaurant in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Maria is known as a Babushka, or elderly woman, in Russian and Kyrgyz cultures. The 88-year-old woman has no family and was ?adopted,? along with two other elderly women, by the Manas Air Base Outreach Society through the Babushka Adoption Foundation, a local non-governmental organization. Each lady?s monthly income averages about 700 som or around $20 per month. Every month, volunteers from Manas join the ladies for lunch to share companionship, a little financial support and a small supply of groceries. AFCENT Band plays for students in Oman
MUSCAT, Oman ? U.S. Air Forces Central?Expeditionary Band ?Falcon? performs for students at Azzan Bin Qais School in Muscat, Oman. Based in Southwest Asia, the band is comprised of deployed Airmen from Active Duty, Reserve and Air National Guard bands.? Tech. Sgt. Phyllis Hanson gives a stuffed toy to a recovering patient during a visit March 4 to the Children's Heart Hospital in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Kygyz mothers and a young girl with cancer, prepare a lunch of beets, potatoes and raw herring for the children who are recovering cancer patients at Kyrgyzstan?s only Children?s Cancer Hospital, located in Bishkek. One or both parents stay with their child, sharing a single bed with them. To help the families get through the healing, Manas Air Base Outreach Society volunteers visit with the children. On this particular visit, Feb. 25, MABOS volunteers not only gave out toys and played with the children but their handy-work skills were put to use replacing 10 old faucets with new ones.
