9/11 Memorial Ceremony
The 376th Air Expeditionary Wing holds a 9/11 Memorial Ceremony at Transit Center at Manas, Kyrgyzstan, Sept. 11, 2013. The ceremony was held to pay tribute to the lives lost in the 9/11 attacks and to highlight the heroic actions of the New York City Fire Department Chief of Department Peter J. Ganci Jr. who was among the 343 firefighters and paramedics killed while conducting rescue operations at the World Trade Center. Following the 9/11 attacks, the Transit Center, formerly known as Ganci Air Base in honor of Chief Ganci, reactivated and designated the 376th Air Expeditionary Wing in December 2001 to support operations in Afghanistan. The somber setting reflects the intent of the memorial walk honoring people who have died in service since the attacks against America on Sept. 11, 2001. The ceremony marked the beginning of the first school year after renovations were made by the 376th Air Expeditionary Wing Theater Security Cooperation, humanitarian assistance branch at the Transit Center at Manas, Kyrgyzstan, including replacing all the windows and upgrading the heating system to better prepare the building for winter. "We were honored to be a part of this ceremony, it's a fantastic thing," Beaty said. "We've worked all summer long with the school administration to make this a better place. The partnership between our government, the Kyrgyz government and Ministry of Education worked hard to be able to provide this for the students better accomodations for their education."
