Airman 1st Class Jeremy Bowen helps Maria K. open a box of chocolates she brought to share with her friends from Manas Air Base who came to visit her and two other elderly ladies for lunch at a Turkish restaurant in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Maria is known as a Babushka, or elderly woman, in Russian and Kyrgyz cultures. The 88-year-old woman has no family and was ?adopted,? along with two other elderly women, by the Manas Air Base Outreach Society through the Babushka Adoption Foundation, a local non-governmental organization. Each lady?s monthly income averages about 700 som or around $20 per month. Every month, volunteers from Manas join the ladies for lunch to share companionship, a little financial support and a small supply of groceries. Airman Bowen is assigned to the 22nd Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron and is deployed from from the 92nd Operations Support Squadron at Fairchild Air Force Base, Wash. (U.S. Air Force photo/Tech.
