Chaplain (Maj.) Derek Wolter shares a conversation with Mariya Ruhlova at a Turkish restaurant March 9 in Bishkek, Kygryzstan. Mariya is known as a Babushka, or elderly woman, in Russian and Kyrgyz cultures. The 79-year-old woman has no family and was adopted, along with two other elderly women, by the Manas Air Base Outreach Society through the Babushka Adoption Foundation, a local non-governmental organization. Each lady's monthly income averages about 700 som or $20 per month. Every month, volunteers from Manas join the ladies for lunch to share companionship, a little financial support and a small supply of groceries. Chaplain Wolter is assigned to the 376th Air Expeditionary Wing Chaplain Office and is deployed from the Missouri Air National Guard's 131st Fighter Wing in St. Louis. (U.S. Air Force photo/Tech.
