Checking the servers
Staff Sgt. Jamal Kareem, 332nd Expeditionary Communication Squadron Network Control Center network administrator, checks the status of network connections coming in and going out through one of the server banks in the NCC July 20, 2010, Joint Base Balad, Iraq. When it comes to getting the connections required by a base of thousands, connectivity follows a chain: starting with a signal in the invisible cyberspace, funneled through the satellites circling the earth to the server farm at Balad, and finally ending at a person’s desktop. Sergeant Kareem, a native of Safford, Ariz., is deployed from the 100th Communication Squadron, Royal Air Force Mildenhall, England. (U.S. Air Force photo/Staff Sgt. Stacy Fowler)
