AL UDEID AIR BASE, Qatar -- Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson notified a U.S. Air Forces Central Command Airman of his selection for the Senior Leader Enlisted Commissioning Program-Active Duty Scholarship, Dec. 20, 2017, here.
The commissioning program allows Air Force senior leadership to select exceptionally performing enlisted members for commissioning through officer training school. Staff Sgt. Anthony Segarra, AFCENT innovations solutions manager, was Wilson’s selection.
"I wanted to personally notify you of your selection to the senior leader commissioning program," Wilson said according to Segarra.
She said I had outstanding recommendations and also said she knew that I’d be her pick after she saw my application, Segarra added.
“I am not at all surprised that Segarra was selected by the SECAF for SLECP-A,” said Lt. Col. Susan Loveland, AFCENT chief of innovations and integrations. “He's smart, hard working, and dedicated; a core driver of AFCENT process improvement and agile development. His experience and personality are exactly right for leading tomorrow's Airmen to build the culture necessary for ‘New-New’ innovations.”
This was Segarra’s second time applying for this commissioning program. Now that he’s been selected he plans on attending South Carolina University and completing his degree in physics.
“It's overwhelming right now thinking about going back to school full time after seven years, but I'm ecstatic, relieved and honored to be afforded the opportunity by Secretary Wilson,” Segarra said. “An eighth grade teacher told me once I was the epitome of an all-or-nothing type person and this has proven to hold true. Since joining I've given everything to the Air Force and haven't been able to focus on my schooling as a result. This program will really allow me to shift my full focus toward schooling, and then back to the Air Force afterwards. It's really a dream scenario come true. I really can't wait to move into the next chapter of my Air Force journey and I definitely won't let her or the Air Force down!”
