The commander of Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum visited the Afghan Air Force Base in Kabul Feb. 24 to get a hands-on feel for the direction of the Afghan Air Force as NATO Air Training Command-Afghanistan drives the initiative to help develop an independent and self-sustaining AAF.

"I wanted to take the opportunity to get a feel of how the Afghans train themselves and how we are helping," said German army Gen. Wolf Langheld, the commander of Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum. "It is one thing to read about it but it is another to actually go and get the feel and smell of the dynamics on the ground."

General Langheld toured the base's flight line during his visit, getting a firsthand look at AAF aircraft such as the Mi-17 transport helicopter seen as a key piece to the AAF's future, coming away impressed with the state of the Afghan Air Force given the difficulty and necessity of vast technical mastery associated with aircraft and their operation, he said.

Joint Force Command Brunssum is the home of the NATO higher headquarters for the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.
