Bagram Airmen fuel mission one gallon at a time
Left to right: Staff Sgt. Gregory King and Airman 1st Class Dustin Henke, assigned to the Petroleum Oils and Lubricants flight, 455th Expeditionary Logistics Readiness Squadron, fill a 50-gallon tank with liquid oxygen at Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan, Oct. 14, 2010. LOX, stored at -297 degrees Fahrenheit, is used in aircraft for aviators to breathe and has recently been used in helicopters to supply casualties with oxygen while being transported. The fuels service center receives more than 300 fuel requests a day and are met in less than 30 minutes on average. The Petroleum Oils and Lubricants flight, ranked fourth in the Air Force for most gallons pumped, pumps 8 to 9 million gallons monthly worth about $16 million.
