Kandahar Air Wing Implements New Afghan Air Force Aircraft Documentation Forms Published Sept. 19, 2010 By Capt. Rob Leese 438th AEW PAO KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- The NATO Air Training Command-Afghanistan and Afghan Air Force team over the last several months have developed a new set of AAF aircraft forms. Previously the AAF used a "diary" to document maintenance actions, a system which lacked standards and essentially had each aircrew or maintenance member write what needed to be worked and what they did. Similar to Air Force Technical Order forms for U.S. Air Force aircraft, the forms are modeled on U.S. Army aircraft maintenance forms. The forms' blocks and instructions are in both Dari and English, though most actions are documented in Dari using Roman numerals. A few days ago, the Kandahar Air Wing (KAW) achieved 100% implementation of the new Afghan Air Force aircraft forms for all their assigned aircraft. The forms document aircraft servicing, pre and post-flight inspections, aircraft discrepancies and maintenance corrective actions, improving transparency and standardization for AAF aircrews and maintenance personnel. This helps bring the AAF in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization standards for documenting aircraft status and maintenance action. Particularly noteworthy is how quickly KAW personnel adopted the new forms and since teaching them, they continue to suggested refinements to the AAF maintenance procedures. This may be a small step, but it is an indicator of the further professional development of the Afghan Air Force in compliance with ICAO maintenance standards.
