Bringing the voice
Airman 1st Class Joshua Slaughter, 379th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron man lift operator, positions Senior Airman Clinton Rowland, 379th Expeditionary Communications Squadron, so he can attach the strap from a 60-ton crane to Giant Voice speakers Aug. 26, 2008, at an undisclosed air base in Southwest Asia. Staff Sgt. Jonathan Arnold, 379 ECS, positions himself under the speaker so he can disconnect it from the old tower once ready to be hoisted by the crane. The three Airmen are part of a team exchanging aging towers with a sturdier replacement that should last nearly twice as long. The Giant Voice system is used to communicate important information to all base populace instantaneously. Airman Slaughter, a native of Eagle, Neb., is deployed from Travis Air Force Base, Calif. Airman Rowland hails from Athens, Ga., and is deployed from Royal Air Force Lakenheath, United Kingdom, and Sergeant Arnold, a native of Muncie, Ind., is deployed from the Fort Wayne Air National Guard, Ind.
