U.S. military members from the Nangarhar Provincial Reconstruction Team delivered emergency Humanitarian Assistance supplies to residents of Kuz Kunar and Dari Noor districts of Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan July 3.

The Nangarhar Emergency Preparedness Committee assessed damage in the area after flash floods struck the area June 30. The committee requested support from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), who then requested help from the PRT.

"Our team was happy to assist in this worthy endeavor. There is a process that has to be followed before we can step into international situations like this. All of the appropriate measures were taken, and we were cleared to go in and support during this crisis," said Lt. Col. Paul Donovan, Nangarhar PRT commander.

During the mission, the PRT delivered 6,000 kilograms of flour, 12,500 kilograms of rice, 1,000 kilograms of beans, 144 liters of cooking oil, 200 kilograms of sugar, 400 tarps, 6 general purpose small tent shelters, and 10 tool kits to the Kuz Kunar District Center for distribution to both affected areas supervised by local officials.

"The men, women and children that benefited from this multi-agency effort were in a desperate situation, and I am confident that our actions reduced the possibility for loss of life," said Donovan.
