May 14 airpower summary: C-17s master the globe

Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations May 14, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, F-15E Strike Eagles dropped guided bomb unit-31s and GBU-38s onto enemy combatants in the vicinity of Orgune. An on-scene joint terminal attack controller declared the mission a success.

An F-15E dropped a GBU-12 onto enemy combatants in Qalenaw. The mission was reported as a success by a JTAC.

In Asadabad, a B-1B Lancer dropped GBU-31s and GBU-38s onto enemy fighting positions. Also in Asadabad, an F-15E dropped a GBU-12 onto enemy combatants in the area. The missions were confirmed as successful by a JTAC.

A French Air Force Mirage-2000 conducted a show of force in Sangin to deter enemy activities in the area. A JTAC declared the mission a success.

In Bermel and Orgune, A-10 Thunderbolt IIs performed shows of force in order to deter enemy activities in the area. The missions were reported as successful by a JTAC.

In Khowst and Asadabad, F-15Es conducted shows of force to deter enemy activities in the area. A JTAC confirmed the missions as successful.

In total, 47 close-air-support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Fourteen Air Force and Royal Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan.

In Iraq, an F-16 Fighting Falcon performed a show of force over coalition forces to deter enemy activities against them. The mission was declared successful by a JTAC.

A Navy F/A-18 Hornet conducted a show of force in Al Qurna to deter enemy activities in the area. A JTAC reported the mission as successful.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 73 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Twenty-four Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. Additionally, eight Air Force, Navy and RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.

Approximately 160 airlift sorties were flown, 615 tons of cargo were delivered and 3,900 passengers were transported. This included approximately 1,500 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Canada, Japan and Korea flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.

On May 13, Air Force, French and RAF tanker crews flew 57 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3.2 million pounds of fuel to 274 receiving aircraft.
