Airpower Summary for October 19

SOUTHWEST ASIA --  Coalition airpower integrated with Coalition ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in the following operations Oct. 19, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, an Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle conducted an air strike on a vehicle containing enemy combatants with a Guided Bomb Unit-12 in Sangin. The Joint Terminal Attack Controller confirmed the strike as successful.

During the same mission, an F-15E performed a show of force to prevent enemy actions against Coalition force in Sangin. The JTAC reported that the mission achieved the desired result.

Enemy combatants were targeted by F-15Es with GBU-38s near Sangin. The mission was deemed successful by the JTAC.

During the same mission, an F-15E targeted an enemy location with cannon fire in Sangin. The JTAC declared the mission a success.

In Kabul, an Air Force B-1B Lancer conducted a show of force to deter enemy activities in an area with a Coalition convoy passing through. The JTAC reported the mission successful.

A French Mirage 2000 performed a show of force to deter enemy activities in Orgune. The JTAC reported the mission as a success.

A Royal Air Force Harrier GR-7 conducted a show of force to support friendly forces in Ghazni. The mission was reported a success by the JTAC.

While in support of a convoy, Mirage 2000s performed shows of force to deter enemy activities in Orgune. The JTAC reported the mission as successful.

In Bagram, an F-15E conducted a show of force to deter enemy activity. The JTAC reported the mission a success.

In total, 24 close air support missions were flown in support of the International Security Assistance Force and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Ten Air Force and Royal Air Force Surveillance and Reconnaissance aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, two Royal Air Force aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

In Iraq, Coalition aircraft flew a total of 49 close air support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions supported Coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided over watch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Nineteen Air Force and Navy Surveillance and Reconnaissance aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Additionally, three Royal Air Force aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

U.S. Air Force C-130s and C-17s provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.

Approximately 114 airlift sorties were flown; 501 tons of cargos were delivered, and 3,959 passengers were transported. This included approximately 37,700 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada and Japan flew in support of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.

On Oct. 18, U.S. Air Force and French aerial refueling crews flew 42 sorties and off-loaded approximately 2.7 million pounds of fuel to 222 receiving aircraft.
