332D AIR EXPEDITIONARY WING -- Red Tails from the 332d Air Expeditionary Wing celebrated the wing’s newest senior noncommissioned officers during a master sergeant release party June 1.
The U.S. Air Force’s Enlisted Force Structure, known internally to Airmen as the brown book due to its dark tan cover, outlines the roles and responsibilities for each enlisted rank. This handbook explains that the senior noncommissioned officers tier preserves our legacy and heritage by focusing on leading teams and shaping the future force.
Several sections of the book describe the critical role of the SNCO, and how they will be proficient in Airmen leadership qualities and mentor their subordinates and peers through continual education, training, and experience to develop ready and disciplined teams.
“Our role in the United States Air Force is more than just a job; it is a calling to serve our country, the Air Force mission, and our fellow Airmen,” said Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass.
Bass laid out her expectations that every Airman knows, learns, and embodies the contents of the Enlisted Force Structure, as we continue the storied history of those who have come before us.
“This is how we will deliver airpower,” added Bass.
This year the active duty Air Force selected 4,040 of 27,296 eligible technical sergeants for promotion to master sergeant at a selection rate of 14.8%.
During the ceremony, the newly selected master sergeants heard this call to action:
“Selects, you have earned the privilege and honor to wear the master sergeant chevrons. Your future responsibilities toward individual Airman and mission accomplishment transcend your core specialty. You are the key to inspiring and deliberately developing the leaders of tomorrow.”
Before the newly selected master sergeants were announced, Brig. Gen Christopher Sage, 332d AEW commander, took a few moments to address the group.
“This is a big day as you are now joining the ranks of the top three and that is no small accomplishment,” said Sage. “You are at the heart of the senior NCO corps.”
