Airmen assigned to the 451st Air Expeditionary Wing volunteer for a mail crew-detail to assist the wing mail custodian gather, sort and distribute mail amongst Air Force personnel May 10 here.

On average, mail crews handle more than 50,000 pounds of mail a week. During the holiday season, roughly 130,000 pounds of mail is distributed weekly.

A rotating group of five Airmen from the wing's groups form the detail on a weekly basis.

Each day begins around 7 a.m. with a trip to the mail distribution facility where the mail crew picks-up all received mail, sorts it by organization and then stores the mail in holding containers until the organization mail representatives are able to come pick up their items.

While dealing with mail issues or distribution is a full time job, the bulk of the workload lasts about four hours. From that point, each units designated mail representative is able to pick up parcels as necessary.
