Smythe 451st AEW Public Affairs KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan -- Income Tax Assistance volunteers will provide free income tax preparation to Air Force personnel beginning Feb. 1 at the Camp Samek Recreation Tent. Walk-in assistance is available from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Alternate appointments may be scheduled by calling the 451st Air Expeditionary Wing Legal office at 420-2279. "Each person will need their military ID card, W-2s, 1099s or 1098s if they apply, and bank account information (routing and checking account numbers)," said Tech. Sgt. Troy Pulliam, 451st AEW legal office. "We're not planning to do any complex tax returns, primarily 1040-EZs." W-2s are available on MyPay, and Master Sgt. Crystal French, 451st AEW finance office, said she could assist with getting them. Volunteers will use programs such as IRS e-file, TurboTax, Tax Slayer and Military OneSource. "Most refunds will be received within eight to 10 days from the time they are completed," Sergeant Pulliam said. There is an automatic extension for deployed personnel. "Members are given until Oct. 15, plus the number of days they were deployed during the tax season," Sergeant Pulliam said. No extension form is required. However, members will need to write "Deployed in support of OEF" on the form when they file. Joint returns can be filed without the deployed spouse's signature or with a taxes power of attorney available. Tax assistance volunteers are: Capt. Kathryn Roman Senior Master Sgt.
