Walk this way Published Sept. 23, 2009 By Master Sgt. Sydney Parker 451st AEW/Saftey Office KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan -- All of us have probably had a chance to take a short walk or a morning run to enjoy the fresh air and scenery here on Kandahar Airfield. While traversing the base roadways as a pedestrian, you probably noticed several hazards you are exposed to while walking or running. Some of these hazards include; vehicle traffic, limited lighting at night, uneven surfaces, and limited sight distances during dusty conditions. These hazards are multiplied at night with even greater reduction in visibility for pedestrians and vehicle operators. As a pedestrian, you can minimize your chances of being involved in an accident by following these safety rules: 1. Military personnel will wear reflective belts or vests during hours of darkness and during periods of reduced visibility. Reflective belts are not required while wearing Air Force physical training uniform. (Note: Effective Sept. 20, 2009, all personnel on KAF are required to wear a reflective device during hours of darkness and period of reduced visibility) 2. It is recommended Air Force personnel not jog or run on roadways during hours of darkness. If you run during the hours of darkness, extra precautions such as reflective vest and flashlight are recommended even if in the AFPT uniform. 3. Assume vehicles do not see you and are not going to yield. Walk, jog, and bike defensively. 4. Use designated crosswalks and cross roads perpendicular to traffic flow. 5. Walk/run on left side of the road, facing traffic where possible. 6. Road guards or safety spotters will be utilized to safely control traffic for formation runs or group running events. 7. Do not wear portable headphones, earphones, or other listening devices while running, jogging, walking, bicycling or skating on roadways. We need you to remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings at all times to ensure you don't become the next statistic.
