San Antonio native keeps deployed security forces unit prepared as logistics superintendent

SOUTHWEST ASIA -- In any deployed security forces squadron, having the right gear, equipment and resources available can make a difference in the operational success of the unit. That's why people like Master Sgt. Manuel A. Mateo IV are on the job to make sure that is never an issue.

Sergeant Mateo is the logistics superintendent for the 380th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron at a non-disclosed base in Southwest Asia. In his position, he manages five logistical support sections within the unit supporting the operational security and escort force protection function of the unit with a $2 million-plus vehicle inventory. He also manages a vehicle section, a $3 million equipment, directs weapons proficiency training and maintenance and coordinates inventory and resupply of unit ammunition stores for the combat arms maintenance and training section.

"I also oversee the tracking and scheduling of 420-personnel who are in-bound or out-bound with the unit deployment management functions and the maintaining of a 24-seven armament capability of 300-plus weapons, ammunition and ancillary equipment inventory within the armory section," said Sergeant Mateo, who is serving in his deployed position for one year.

Sergeant Mateo is a career security forces Airman - having served more than 22 and a half years. Every day, the security forces he helps keep geared up are providing the security and force protection for more than 1,900 deployed personnel and billions of dollars worth of deployed aircraft, infrastructure and equipment.

"Security and force protection of personnel and assets within the deployed areas is paramount," Sergeant Mateo said. "It is a duty that is never-ending and cannot be waivered. Security and force protection personnel work 24 hours a day, 365 days out of the year. The logistical support required to facilitate this task is also never ending. The security of personnel and resources is vital to ensure that the overall mission can get off of the ground."

Throughout his career, Sergeant Mateo has worked in nearly every facet of the security forces career field. He said he continues on because of the call of duty.

"I have dedicated more than 22 years of my life to ensure our nation stays at the forefront of freedom," said Sergeant Mateo, whose hometown is San Antonio, Texas. "That's the most important reason for why I do this job. I originally joined the military for that reason and have never strayed from it."

The master sergeant has also been on many security forces deployments. He said he especially understands the toll it can take on family members waiting for him to return and also knows that not just anyone can be an Airman and especially a security force Airman.

"I have always remembered that the oath of enlistment is not something that is to be taken lightly," Sergeant Mateo said. "When an individual takes it, they become part of a select group who has vowed to dedicate their lives to the protection of those who cannot. This is not a job, like many of the citizens of our country live by, nor can it be filled by just anyone. There is no time clock, no personal agenda, and many times little to no reward. But it is the task that we all have taken on with little to no regard for our own safety and security. I am now and have been honored to serve with my fellow Airmen -- they are truly the heart and soul of why we are the greatest force in the word."
