380th Security Forces and Firefighters compete in 2022 Battle of the Badges
Captain Damon Gandy, the operations officer of the 380th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron, attempts to knock over a tire during the “Defender Relay” race portion of the Battle of the Badges, September 10, 2022, at Al Dhafra Air Base, United Arab Emirates. The Defender Relay asked a team of three to disassemble an M4 carbine, use a sledge hammer to move a tire, push a sled weighing 225 pounds 100-meters, throw sandbags, and reassemble an M4 carbine all while remembering the components of an improvised explosive device. Many Battle of the Badges contests are held nationwide, as annual athletic competitions between local police and fire departments.

380th AEW remembers 9/11
Senior Airman Jason T. Helgeson, a firefighter assigned to the 380th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron, strikes “the four-fives” during a 9/11 memorial ceremony September 11, 2022, at Al Dhafra Air Base, United Arab Emirates. Historically, when a firefighter died in the line of duty, departments would use the tolling of a bell to alert all members that a comrade had perished. During the memorial ceremony the striking of the four-fives signified the moment of each attack on the World Trade Towers, and the end of the moment of silence, which concluded the ceremony.
