The Defender Relay asked a team of three to disassemble an M4 carbine, use a sledge hammer to move a tire, push a sled weighing 225 pounds 100-meters, throw sandbags, and reassemble an M4 carbine all while remembering the components of an improvised explosive device. Historically, when a firefighter died in the line of duty, departments would use the tolling of a bell to alert all members that a comrade had perished. During the memorial ceremony the striking of the four-fives signified the moment of each attack on the World Trade Towers, and the end of the moment of silence, which concluded the ceremony.
