Hydraulics specialists 'strut' their stuff

Staff Sgt. Larry Grimes (left) and Staff Sgt. Matthew Winters, 376th Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Unit hydraulics specialists, place the lower extension on landing gear struts for a KC-135 Stratotanker at the Transit Center at Manas, Kyrgyzstan, Dec. 1. The landing gear had to be repaired and reinstalled in under 24 hours to ensure the aircraft was mission ready for the next day’s air tasking order. The last KC-135 was delivered to the military in 1965 so maintenance is essential to keep these vital aircraft in the air, since the Transit Center hosts 25 percent of the deployed tanker force, and provides 30 percent of the aerial refueling in the area of responsibility. Grimes is deployed from the 92nd Maintenance Group at Fairchild Air Force Base, Wash. Winters is deployed from the 99th Air Refueling Squadron in Birmingham, Ala. (U.S. Air Force photo/Tech. Sgt.
