Operation New Dawn

Astronauts Neil Armstrong (left), Jim Lovell and Gene Cernan answer questions during an appearance for 700 service members in the Sustainer Theater, Joint Base Balad, Iraqi, Oct. 11, 2010. During a panel discussion, the spaceflight pioneers shared their groundbreaking aerospace experiences. As Apollo 11 commander, Neil Armstrong was the first human to walk on the moon; retired Navy Capt. Jim Lovell was the commander of the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission; retired Navy Capt. Gene Cernan, Apollo 17 commander, was the last human to depart from the moon. The visit was part of the "Legends of Aerospace Tour," with former "Good Morning America" host David Hartman. Sponsored by the USO and Armed Forces Entertainment, the tour visited bases in Europe and Southwest Asia. (U.S. Air Force photo/Lt. Col. Robert Couse-Baker)
