Following a ground breaking ceremony at Birdik Village School in Kyrgyzstan students from the school challenge Airmen from nearby Manas Air Base to an impromptu game of soccer, April 14. The Airmen were no match for the Kyrgyz children's sheer numbers, agility and speed, and ended the exciting game, 2-3. The ground breaking ceremony kicked off a six-month, $470,000 project to renovate the school, currently a shell of a building. Funded by the U.S. Central Command and managed by Airmen from Manas AB, the project is scheduled for completion in Autumn 2009 and will provide a quality learning environment for 200 students. A local Kyrgyz company, Imarat Stroy, was awarded the contract March 17 and has already gutted the building in preparation for the rebuilding effort. (U.S Air Force photo/Tech. Sgt. Phyllis Hanson)
