Manas KC-135s revolutionize combat ops with ROBE system

Lt. Col. Pamela Freeland, the chief of standardization and evaluation for the 376th Expeditionary Operations Group, explains the purpose and benefits of the Roll-On-Beyond-Line-Of-Sight Enhancement System, or ROBE, to KC-135 pilots Capt. Julian Benton (rear) and Capt. Walter Hale at Manas Air Base, Kyrgyzstan, March 13. Since its maiden operational flight on a KC-135 Stratotanker, July 13, ROBE is revolutionizing combat operations in Afghanistan by bridging the different communications systems used by coalition aircraft and ground units, expanding communications coverage into the most remote reaches, and allowing more data to be rapidly shared among warfighters. Both captains are deployed from the 92nd Air Refueling Squadron at Fairchild Air Force Base, Wash. Colonel Freeland is deployed from the 97th Training Squadron at Altus AFB, Okla.
