Senior Airman Chad Holloway, a KC-135 boom operator, learns how to boot up and operate the Roll-On-Beyond-Line-Of-Sight Enhancement System, or ROBE, from Northrop Grumman contractors Keith Lareau and Andrina Luczon at Manas Air Base, Kyrgyzstan, March 13. Since its maiden operational flight on a KC-135 Stratotanker, July 13, ROBE is revolutionizing combat operations in Afghanistan by bridging the different communications systems used by coalition aircraft and ground units, expanding communications coverage into the most remote reaches, and allowing more data to be rapidly shared among warfighters. Both contractors are deployed from San Diego to train new aircrew on the system and help the 376th Air Expeditionary Wing work through technical and procedural challenges as the first operational ROBE-equipped unit.
