High-altitude clouds drift over Camp Cunningham at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, Dec. 13. The old control tower was built by the Soviet Union in 1976 -- more than two years prior to their invasion of Afghanistan -- to help establish Bagram Air Field as a stable platform to move troops and supplies in and out of Afghanistan. After coalition forces captured the airfield in Dec. of 2001, the tower and runway were refurbished to allow A-10 Thunderbolt IIs to conduct missions from here. Later, a modern runway and tower were built to accommodate larger aircraft with minimal wear and tear due to foreign object damage and landing gear stress. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt.
