10/15/2008 -- SATHER AIR BASE, Iraq - Staff Sgt. Andrew Love takes base-line vital signs on Staff Sgt. Chris Pieper before he dons his protective equipment and enters a burn building during a live burn exercise at Sather Air Base. Sergeant Love is a medic assigned to the 447th Expeditionary Medical Squadron and was responsible for monitoring the health of firefighters due to the extreme heat and stressful conditions they are exposed to during the training. Sergeant Love is an Indiana Air National Guard Airmen deployed to Iraq from the 181st Medical Group in Terre Haute. Sergeant Pieper is assigned to the 447th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron and is deployed from the North Dakota Air National Guard's119th Wing in Fargo. The Sather Firefighters and medics are responsible for fire protection, rescue operations and medical services for the base and airfield on the west side of Baghdad International Airport, one of the busiest aerial hubs in Iraq.
