SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Local contractors hauled base course material to the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing compound here Sept. 16. Each truck carries approximately 65 tons of material. This is material is commonly called "select fill" and is the key ingredient to building stabile roads, parking lots, or even foundations for our trailers/housing. The 380th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron "Dirt Boys" spread out the material in 3-5 inch lifts, wet it down and roll it with the steel wheel roller to compact the material. Water is another key ingredient needed to ensure adequate compaction for a stable surface. ECES is preparing an area for war readiness materials in support of Operation Iraqi and Enduring Freedom.(U.S. Air Force photo/Tech. Sgt. Christopher A. Campbell)(released)
