JOINT BASE BALAD, Iraq -- Airman 1st Class George Benson gears up for his first trip outside the wire here Sept. 4. Benson and other Airmen assigned to the 732nd Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron Utilities Detachment 6 will construct new facilities at a forward operating base to house approximately 350 Soldiers. Because the Airmen are assigned to joint source solution taskings, filling duties traditionally performed outside the wire by the Army, they frequently wear fire-retardant Army Combat Uniforms to blend in with their brothers in arms and to help protect them from flash fires after an improvised explosive device attack. Benson, an electrical systems journeyman, is deployed from Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska. His hometown is Granada Hills, Calif. (U.S. Air Force photo/Airman 1st Class Jason Epley)
