An Afghan Air Force Intermediate Maintenance Squadron engine-body technician inspects a tail rotor gearbox on a Mi-17 helicopter at Shindand Air Base, Afghanistan as part of a 100-hour phase inspection. The inspection, which began Nov. 17, 2013, was the first Afghan-led, managed and controlled inspection. Advisors with NATO Air Training Command-Afghanistan helped set the conditions for success by working with their Afghan counterparts to plan the inspection. As the AAF continues to take the lead, the IMS inspection team at the Shindand Air Wing will head-up all future Mi-17 phase inspections while coalition advisors take a step back.
