Doha, Qatar, --

United States military service members, coalition forces and their families were invited to participate in an Iftar dinner at the Katara Cultural Village Main Hall in Doha, Qatar on May 21, 2019.

Qatari Brigadier General Abdel Aziz Saleh Al-Sulaiti, General Headquarters International Military Cooperation Authority invited the service members to Iftar to foster community relations between the host nation and military forces in Qatar during Ramadan.

“It’s important for leaders to help the younger members see why these relationships are important,” said Senior Master Sgt. Jessica Syverson, 746 Expeditionary Airlift Squadron first sergeant. “It also helps to understand what roll we have and how to keep building on that relationship.”

“Over 600 U.S. participants alone show up to the Iftar dinner,” said Capt. Chad Margetson, Host Nation Coordination Cell plans and programs officer in-charge. “Iftar served as an educational opportunity for those who are not familiar with the traditions of Ramadan to witness them in an open setting.”

Iftar, meaning, “breaking the fast,” in Arabic, is the meal served every day during Ramadan at sunset. Each year, Muslims around the world observe the 29-30 day holiday that encompasses fasting, prayer and reflection. Fasting during Ramadan occurs daily from sunrise to sunset.

“Traditionally, the fast is broken with dates and water or a yogurt drink prior to prayer or maghrib, meaning, ‘sunset prayer,’ in Arabic,” said Margetson.

Following maghrib, a full-course meal, consisting of soup, salad, appetizers, main dishes, desserts and juices is served.

“It was great experience seeing my Airmen excited and eager to participate in learning about the culture,” said Syverson. “From what I saw, a lot of understanding was brought back from Iftar.”
