NCOs share experiences during 64th AEG 'Speed Mentoring'

The 64th Air Expeditionary Group Focus 5/6 hosted a "Speed Mentoring" session June 13 at the Mirage dining facility here, affording 17 junior and senior NCOs an opportunity to sit down with 30 Airmen during a one-on-one question and answer session.

Each NCO came prepared with a topic of discussion in which they were knowledgeable to speak about. Some of the main topics of discussion were:
  • Taking Charge of Your Career
  • Professionalism
  • Reviewing Personal and Career Records
  • Preparing to be an NCO
The NCOs each sat at a table with one to three Airmen and spoke in five-minute intervals. After the five minutes were up, the NCOs rotated to the next table to speak to the next group of Airmen. After the session, the Airmen were given an opportunity to provide NCOs with feedback.

Airmen from the 64th AEG said they felt the mentoring sessions provided an opportunity for leadership to see how they are doing and showed they cared about their subordinate's futures.

"It was interesting to see how forthcoming the Airmen were in regards to their thoughts, goals and aspirations for their own careers," said Staff Sgt. Minerva Rosario, an NCO mentor. "The mentoring session allowed the Airmen to express what they wanted out of their careers, and we [NCOs] were able to give them some guidance for their journey. This was an all-around refreshing experience."

According to Air Force Instruction 36-2618, Enlisted Force Structure, an NCO's primary responsibility is to ensure Airmen have all of the tools and opportunities needed to be successful. Mentoring sessions like these allow NCOs to tell Airmen about their personal experiences providing Airmen insight through their predecessor's career decisions.
