Cover your cough Published Oct. 21, 2011 By Senior Airman Ashley Alexandre 379th Expeditionary Medical Group Public Health SOUTHWEST ASIA -- It's that time of the year again - "cold and flu season!" Numerous people suffering from common colds or upper respiratory infections have recently visited the 379th Expeditionary Medical Group. Base residents can follow these simple recommendations from the base clinic's public health professionals to help keep themselves and their Wingmen healthy. WASH YOUR HANDS! Hand washing is the best course of prevention against the common cold. Be sure to wash your hands frequently throughout the day, especially before you eat or prepare food, after using the restroom, and if you've been around someone who is ill. Also, avoid touching your face. COVER YOUR COUGH (OR SNEEZE)! Cough or sneeze into your sleeve, or use a tissue. If you use a tissue, dispose of it properly. If you can't avoid using your hands to cover a cough or sneeze, be sure to wash your hands immediately. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF! Keep your body hydrated and be sure to eat properly. Also, don't forget to exercise regularly and get a good night's sleep. Studies show that the healthier you are, the easier it is for your body to fight off a cold. KEEP YOUR SURROUNDINGS CLEAN! Cleaning work and living areas (especially shared spaces) with bleach or Clorox helps to kill cold and flu viruses. Pay particular attention to tables, phones, light switches and doorknobs. VACCINATION! This is the best way to avoid getting the flu and to prevent passing it on to others. Help keep the mission going by staying healthy.
