ANZAC day
Australian Air Force, Warrant Officer Disciplinary, David Toohey, 633.4 Task Group, observes a moment of silence during the dawn service ceremony here April 25. He holds a Flanders poppy, a sign of rememberance for ANZAC day. During World War I, red poppies were seen to be among the fi rst living plants that sprouted from the devastation of the battlefi elds of northern France and Belgium. Soldiers’ folklore had it that the poppies were vivid red from having been nurtured in ground drenched with the blood of their comrades. (U.S. Air Force photo/2nd Lt. Tania Bryan)
