A B-1B Lancer, assigned to the 37th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron, was involved in a ground incident and caught fire at 9:10 p.m. local April 4 while taxiing after landing. The crew evacuated the aircraft safely, were transported to the base medical clinic for treatment and released.

The 379th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron's fire and emergency response teams contained the fire and the base resumed normal operations the next day.

Base personnel responded quickly and professionally to the incident, that resulted in damage to the aircraft and several structures, said Brig. Gen. Charlie Lyon, 379th Air Expeditionary Wing commander.

"I'm thrilled to have our crewmembers safe and proud of the actions of so many in the wing whose rapid action ensured the safety of our most valuable assets -- our Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors and Marines," the general said.

"We couldn't have responded as quickly or efficiently without the cooperation of our joint and coalition partners and the tremendous support of host nation leaders. My heartfelt thanks go out to everyone involved," he added.

For safety reasons and to help facilitate cleanup operations, base officials are asking everyone to avoid the incident area until further notice. Additional information can be found on the base intranet site and the commander's access channel.
