Many states offer automatic extensions to military personnel which last until separation from active duty service. If your state does not offer an extension, many permit military members to renew their licenses by mail or on their Web sites. Information on renewal by mail or the Web can generally be found with a search for the Department of Motor Vehicles for the appropriate state. Where do you find your state specific rules on military extensions for driver licenses? Easy, just log onto the intranet, go the CC Corner in the upper left hand corner, select Legal Office from the drop down options and then click on Legal Assistance. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to review the licensing rules for all 50 states. If you intend to drive off-base while here in the AOR and your license has an expired date despite this automatic extension, please visit the legal office for an off-base driving letter for use in the event you are stopped by the local police. The letter will site the law from your particular state and explain, in both English and Arabic, why your license appears to be expired. Additionally, we recommend that all drivers travel off-base with a photocopy of your license in addition to your actual driver's license. Local police officials have confiscated licenses in the past and getting the licenses back has proven to be difficult.
