Three weeks is but a small portion of Cadets' overall time at the U.S. Air Force Academy, but it can be the most valuable.

These weeks provide priceless insight and hands-on experience for Cadets moving forward commissioning as second lieutenants in the Air Force.

"The Operation Air Force program allows the academy cadets to sample a good cross-section of what active duty Air Force life is like and helps them make decisions about what career fields they would be interested in when they leave the academy," said Capt. Paige Grant, 379th Air Expeditionary Wing Protocol officer in charge and Operation Air Force program liaison. "It also gives them the opportunity to enhance their leadership potential by interacting with both enlisted and officers."

In this program, Cadets in their second year at the academy visit an Air Force installation to expose them to the AF way of life. During their three weeks here, the cadets visited various squadrons to get hands-on experience with the jobs performed therein.

"I've learned a lot, not only about how a deployment and operational tempo works, but I've also learned about the various elements that make up a wing," said USAFA Cadet Nikole Poupart. "I've learned a lot that I can use in the future."

Most units here have had a Cadet spend time shadowing them, this has two benefits: it gives them the opportunity to experience of the operational Air Force while gaining experience in their future career field.

"It's great, because it allows me to see all of the careers available and to experience life outside of the academy," said USAFA Cadet James Cardinal.

The Cadets had a final briefing with the Brig. Gen. Darren Hartford 379th Air Expeditionary Wing, commander and he had a few words of advice for the cadets.

"It is your attitude and efforts that will help you make it through your Air Force career and remember you will have the rank but not the experience," said Hartford. "Seek out advice from your senior enlisted as they will be a huge part of your success as leaders."

Overall, the Cadets enjoyed the program and the experience they gained from participating.

"I thought this entire program was run really well and I feel I have even more knowledge of what career I want to do in the Air Force," said USAFA Cadet Nathaniel Dickman . "This experience has helped me confirm my decision and I look forward to the challenges ahead."
