Shoppers at the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing got a taste of home Saturday as they experienced the thrill of holiday shopping.

Many waited hours in line for the grand opening of the newly constructed Exchange, hoping to discover a coveted item they were previously unable to find.

"I got off work at 5 a.m., I have not been to sleep yet and it is 7:40 a.m. now," said Airman 1st Class Tykeas Walker, 380th Expeditionary Force Support Squadron. "I am excited to see the variety of electronics, clothing and DVDs."

With the visibly larger size of the Exchange and the promise of door prizes, anticipation had been building throughout the past few weeks for the opening.

"I woke up, looked at my phone and saw it was time to get over here," said Airman Shondell Buttram, 380th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron. "I got up, got dressed then shined my flashlight in my roommates face and said, 'Wake up! It's 6:40 a.m., the Exchange is about to open, we've got to get going.' "

After opening remarks and the ribbon cutting by Brig. Gen. Paul McGillicuddy, 380th Air Expeditionary Wing commander, the doors were opened and the crowd was let in. Shoppers were not disappointed by the variety available at the new Exchange.

The merchandise ranged from bicycles and rugs to the familiar Power Zone with DVD players, cases, televisions and even gaming systems.

"I love all this new merchandise," said Army Sgt. Jean Yacinthe, Army Supply Support Activity. "I came here to get the new Halo game."

Other customers echoed the satisfaction felt by Yacinthe.

"Thank you for the new Exchange," Buttram said. "There's so much variety."
Turnout for the grand opening exceeded expectations, said Amanda Hartfield, Exchange general manager.

"We received support from every aspect of the community," she said. "We really appreciate the support and we look forward to continuing to serve those who serve their country."

The new Exchange is a great addition for those at the 380th AEW, but it has even larger implications for AAFES throughout the AOR.

This Exchange will be the model by which Exchanges in other contingencies operate, Hartfield said.
