Airman 1st Class Ryan Jackson, 908th Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron KC-10 Extender boom operator, didn't let a deployment to this undisclosed base in Southwest Asia prevent him from pitching in to help one of his favorite charities.

Airman Jackson first started volunteering for American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. at his home station Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J. He said that he enjoyed helping out there and was happy to be able to pitch in at his deployed location as well.

"It is very rewarding, he said. "There are many opportunities to support different programs while deployed and I am glad I had the chance to be in charge of this particular fundraiser."

American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. is an organization of mothers who have lost a son or daughter in the service of their country. "It's an outstanding organization that brings families of fallen comrades together to help ease the burdens associated with their loss and sacrifice," said Airman Jackson.

The first event he worked for the charity was an annual Memorial Ruck March, hosted by Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, which raises money and awareness for the organization. The competition is made up of four-person teams that walk or run 6.2 miles while carrying 30-pound ruck sacks.

"The event is a remembrance of fallen service members and strengthens base and community camaraderie," said Airman Jackson. "It also instills a sense of teamwork, as all members must cross the finish line together."

Airman Jackson finished his fund-raising drive here on Oct. 10. He said it was an involved process.

"I put together a proposal to raise money while serving here, spread the word to squadron members, and set up collection points so that our deployed unit could make a donation in the name of the 908th EARS in support of our Tanker Team back at home station."
