Gen. Petraeus promotes 380th's newest Captains

SOUTHWEST ASIA --  Gen. David Petraeus, U.S. Central Command Commander, honored several Airman and Soldiers assigned to the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing when he promoted them to the rank of captain in a ceremony here Tuesday, May 26.

General Petraeus stopped at the 380th AEW for the ceremony and to pass on some words of encouragement for those deployed here.

"It's important I think every now and then to step back and to remember what it is you are doing, to remember the mission we are engaged in and remember the part that you play in that particular mission," he said. "We are fighting back in Afghanistan, making sure that that country does not once again become a sanctuary for extremists to do what they did to us on 9/11 and we are fighting back in Iraq against extremists there who have been trying to prevent the transition of Iraq into a modern Islamic state."

General Petraeus also reminded the promotees that the mission relies heavily on the different branches of the military working jointly toward a common goal and how essential they are to that.

"There are more than 215,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen out here deployed in the Central Command area of responsibility and tens of thousands of civilians from our country are out here as well," he said. "It's everybody linking arms making way together that enables us to do what we do and you play a very important part in that."
