Grilled by the First Sergeant

SOUTHWEST ASIA --  First sergeants are asked to fill many roles during a deployment; from filling out paperwork to visiting with Airmen; they are essential to completing the mission.

The 380th Air Expeditionary Wing's First Sergeant's Council does many things to connect with Airmen around the base. One of the activities they regularly conduct is a midnight Motown barbecue for the maintenance and operations workers. The bi-monthly event allows them to give back to those who work late nights and often miss out on many of the finer benefits the base has to offer.

During the event the council prepares and cooks between 200-500 steaks.

"Our small council takes every opportunity to see our Airmen and Soldiers, day or night, Motown or Phantom," said Master Sgt. Marvyn Mulcahy, the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing First Sergeant's Counsel president. "We do anything we can to support the people making the mission happen. Personally, I just love spending time with the other first sergeants and I love meeting people. For us, it's a team building opportunity and it's access to the Airmen. It's easy to do those things over food."

The event serves as a boost to the spirit of the Airmen working the shift. Instead of warmed-over food they have the opportunity to enjoy a freshly-cooked steak.

"I think it boosts everyone's morale," said Senior Airman Chesley Taylor, 380th Expeditionary Force Support Squadron quality assurance. "It's nice that the first sergeants want to help out. People appreciate it and look forward to steaks hot off the grill."

The first sergeant's midnight Motown barbecue occurs every second Sunday outside of Roy's Dining Facility. The next event is scheduled for the 3rd of August.
