Rock Solid Warrior: Staff Sgt. Brooke Byerley

SOUTHWEST ASIA -- This week's Rock Solid Warrior is Staff Sgt. Brooke Byerley, a 386th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron construction manager and Pass and ID liaison, deployed from Altus Air Force Base, Okla. The Rock Solid Warrior program is a way to recognize and spotlight the Airmen of the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing for their positive impact and commitment to the mission.

Why did you join the Air Force?

I joined the Air Force to not only serve my country and carry on the military legacy within my family, but also to travel and go to school.

How is your deployed unit/job different from your home unit/job?

At my home base I work in technical support and construction management, so I have little to no experience working with Force Protection. My deployed work as Pass & ID Liaison has provided me with experiences in a job I wouldn’t normally have to opportunity to do.

While I have worked in Construction Management at my home base, the contingency work that is being done here is vastly different from normal construction at Altus Air Force Base. The projects being done here not only support a different mission, but are also completed by a variety of contractors.

What are some of your professional and personal goals?

My professional goals include: obtaining expeditionary knowledge pertaining to my job, enhancing my leadership skills as an NCO, and finish Course 15.

My personal goals include: finishing my master's in Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and getting into great physical shape.

What is your favorite part of your mission here?

While the mission here is expansive, my favorite part is working with other countries and the civil engineering forces to ensure the base is growing at a rate that will support future endeavors and missions.

What are some of the challenges you face here? How do you overcome them?

With the high tempo of day-to-day life here, I find that it’s easy for stress to build up. To overcome these stressors I work out, sleep, and find activities away from work to help me destress.

What are some of your hobbies?

Back at home I enjoy hiking, traveling, and spending time with my German shepherd.
