SOUTHWEST ASIA--This week’s Rock Solid Warrior is Staff Sgt. Dylan Kunz, a 386th Expeditionary Communications Squadron Detachment 1 NCOIC, deployed from Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. The Rock Solid Warrior program is a way to recognize and spotlight the Airmen of the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing for their positive impact and commitment to the mission.

What is your current job title and unit?

I am a 386th Expeditionary Communications Squadron Detachment 1 NCOIC.

Which squadron and base are you deployed from?

I am deployed from the 366th Communications Squadron at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho.

Why did you join the Air Force?

I joined the Air Force for direction in my life and to continue with family tradition. I was in college for two years and I changed my major five times before realizing I didn’t have a goal. My father and both of my grandfathers also served.

How is your deployed unit/job different from your home unit/job?

I would say the scope of the work we do. Due to the limited manning we have as a detachment our jobs overlap far more. I think it helps create more well-rounded technicians.

What are some of your professional and personal goals?

My short term focuses are on cross training when I rotate home and to utilize tuition assistance to earn my bachelor’s degree in Cyber security. My long term goals are working towards the Computer Network Operations Development Program and preparing for career progression.

What is your favorite part of your mission here?

Being able to expand my knowledge base and being able to learn all I can before retraining. Seeing how every office and base works together to provide everyone in the AOR the ability to communicate with anywhere else on the planet is truly amazing.

What are some of your hobbies?

I enjoy typical nerdy things video games, reading, working on my computer, etc. I also enjoy the outdoors hiking, fishing, playing disc golf. I was pretty excited to find out there was a course here.

What are some of the challenges you face here? How do you overcome them?

The biggest challenge is also this job's greatest benefit, being in a small work center means that there is always a lot of work to go around. We are able to handle all of our workload quickly by working together and sharing our knowledge with one another.
