The Rock Solid Warrior program is a way to recognize and spotlight the Airmen of the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing for their positive impact and commitment to the mission.

What is your current job title and unit?

My current job title is vehicle management contract office representative and I am with the 386th Expeditionary Logistics Readiness Squadron.

Which squadron and base are you deployed from?

I am deployed from the190th Air Refueling Wing, Forbes Field Air National Guard Base, Topeka, Kan.

Why did you join the Air Force?

I joined the Air Force because I tried college, but did not like the fact that my mother had been using her retirement money to help pay for it. I ran into an old friend on campus and he suggested I join the Air National Guard. So I joined to pay for school and found full time employment instead.

How is your deployed unit/job different from your home unit/job?

This is the first time I have been in charge of one primary task while working with others in the same career field. Back home I am the only fleet management and analysis person. The programs are small, but there are so many of them. Here I am responsible for one large program while I can count on those around me to handle their programs.

What are some of your professional and personal goals?

My immediate professional goal is to become first sergeant in the next couple years. A long term goal is to make E-9 in my home unit. As corny as it sounds, I enjoy being in a position to help guide others. My personal goal is to have my finances set up for retirement where I can play golf every day that I am not on vacation with my wife. I have considered becoming a financial advisor after my military career has ended.

What is your favorite part of your mission here?

My favorite part of the mission has been the people I have met. Nearly everyone I work with has had a positive attitude and just wants to get things done. This being my first deployment I can appreciate that everyone comes here not knowing exactly what they will be tasked with and they just figure it out.

What are some of your hobbies?

I enjoy making sure the kids get to their activities and get their homework done. I do get to play softball some and I plan to play way more golf.

What are some of the challenges you face here? How do you overcome them?

Leaving the family was a huge challenge for me. When my 11 year old started crying uncontrollably about me leaving, it crushed me. I have found sharing stories with co-workers about our families really relieves the stress of not being around them. Obviously, calling home helps not being around my kids.
