RSW: Staff Sgt. Adam Shantie Published Dec. 9, 2011 386th Air Expeditionary Wing Public Affairs SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Name: Staff Sgt. Adam J. Shantie Deployed Unit: 386th Expeditionary Medical Group Public Health Duty Title: NCO in charge, Public Health Home unit/station: 88th Aerospace Medical Squadron,Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio How do you support the mission here? As NCOIC of Public Health, I support the mission in many ways. I inspect all food facilities here at Ali Al Salem and Al-Mubarak to ensure employees are following proper foodhandler procedures and providing safe food for all personnel. I also track immunizations for all personnel assigned to the Rock and notify 1st Sergeants on a weekly basis to inform them of who is due/overdue in their units. Daily Disease Non-Battle Injury (DNBI) tracking is the most important job I conduct to hopefully indentify any issues that might be affecting personnel deployed here and ensuring it is captured early enough to prevent any mission impact. Also in-processing all newly assigned personnel upon arrival here to ensure all deployed medical requirements have been met assuring all deployed personnel are medically ready to perform their duties. Favorite movie: I have two - Transformers and Clerks 2 Favorite restaurant: Texas Roadhouse Favorite superhero: Wolverine Place you would most like to visit: McMurdo Station, Antarctica Favorite actor/actress: Nicholas Cage Favorite food: A good steak Favorite musical group/musician/singer: Five Finger Death Punch and Avenged Sevenfold How many times have you deployed and what makes this deployment unique? This is my fourth deployment. I volunteered three times to deploy to perform Third Country National escort detail before this deployment. This is the first time I have deployed as a Public Health Technician and everything is new to me, since I'm in charge I get to see what my bosses back home go through. I've also had a chance to help out around the base more during this deployment How does your job differ in a deployed environment vs. home base? My job back home is in Occupational Health, where I conduct hearing tests every day. Being deployed here I get to see the whole aspect of Public Health by being in a two person shop. Between myself and my co-worker we have to done a little bit of everything from what the OIC to the lowest ranking airmen would do back home.
